The UC SHIP policy that allows graduates to voluntarily extend their coverage after graduating (under specific conditions) will end at the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.
As a reminder, after you graduate, your UC SHIP coverage continues until the end of the day before the next academic term begins. If you graduate during the spring term, for instance, your coverage will extend through the summer until the day before the start of the next fall term.
How the policy affects 2024–2025 graduates
If you graduate before the end of the 2024–2025 academic year (in the spring or summer of 2025), you have the option to purchase UC SHIP coverage for one additional term. To be eligible for this extended coverage, you must meet both of the following conditions:
- You were enrolled in UC SHIP during the coverage period in which you completed your degree.
- You purchase coverage within 30 days of the date your coverage ends.
To purchase additional coverage, complete the enrollment form (there’s a link to it on Extending Coverage After Graduation), and email it to Academic HealthPlans (AHP), or call (855) 427-3167 before the next term begins.
How the policy affects graduates in 2025–2026 and beyond
If you will graduate during or after the 2025–2026 academic term (in the fall of 2025 or later), you cannot continue UC SHIP coverage beyond your final academic term. Your UC SHIP coverage will end the day before the next academic term begins.
Coverage options after graduating
As you navigate the complexities of health care coverage after graduating, make sure you understand the coverage options that may be available to you:
Parent’s plan: If you’re under the age of 26, you may be eligible for coverage on a parent’s health insurance plan. This can be a convenient and cost-effective option.
Employer-sponsored plan: If you land a job that offers health benefits, enrolling in your employer’s health insurance plan is a great option. Employer-sponsored plans often provide comprehensive coverage at a lower cost than you’d find elsewhere.
State Health Insurance Marketplace plan: You can explore health insurance options through the Health Insurance Marketplace in your state. This allows you to compare different plans and find one that fits your needs and budget.
Graduate school plans: If you are continuing your education and enrolling in a graduate program, check to see if your new institution offers health insurance plans for students. Many universities (including UC) provide health coverage options for their graduate students.
